Nairobi, capital of Kenya, also known as the “Green city in the sun” for its warm weather and large green areas, began as a storage area for the railway line running from Mombasa / Kampala. It has become nowadays the fourth largest city in Africa and one of the most influential on the continent.
Nairobi is not only a gateway to the wonders of Kenya, as it has in itself more than a few surprises for the tourist-visitor. The city of Nairobi, as well as being the political capital, is undoubtedly also the cultural capital of the nation. One of the highlights on any itinerary is the National Museum, prior to venturing out to visit the famous National Parks and Reserves of Kenya. In the suburbs of Nairobi are situated important archaeological sites such as Olduvai where were found the oldest human remains. Tourists on a visit to Nairobi cannot resist the temptation of shopping in the Maasai Market for curios and local artefacts. Throughout the city there are many open spaces, gardens and parks, in fact most of Nairobi is green. The most famous city park is Uhuru Park (Freedom Park). Another interesting tourist park is Central Park, adjacent to Uhuru Park, this park includes a memorial for Jomo Kenyatta, the first president of independent Kenya. Alternatively, a short distance from the city centre, you can see and take pictures of orphaned elephants at the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, which combines well with a visit to the Giraffe Centre, home to the rare reticulated giraffe. A perfect way to pass an afternoon or even a full day is a visit to the Nairobi National Park, situated on the outskirts of Nairobi.
